The Corporate Afterlife
Six months after Sarah left the agency, Elena still found herself checking for tails. Old habits died hard, even in the fluorescent-lit purgatory of Apex Analytics. The corporate pyramid rose before her—glass offices at the top, cubicles at the bottom, a hierarchy of diminishing souls climbing toward promotions that meant nothing. Elena had been a spy once. Now she was just another zombie in the workforce, shuffling between meetings, dead behind the eyes, grateful for the anesthesia of routine.
Then she saw him across the atrium. That walk—the slight hesitation at doorways, the peripheral scanning, the way he never stood with his back to an exit. Mikhail. The friend who'd saved her life in Prague, the man who'd vanished three years ago during the extraction that went wrong. The man she'd mourned over cheap whiskey in safe houses from Budapest to Berlin.
Her heart knocked against ribs that had grown too accustomed to stillness.
Mikhail approached her desk, casual as sunrise, wearing the badge of a junior analyst. "New in IT," he said, sliding a flash drive next to her cold coffee. "You look like hell, El."
"You too." She almost smiled, the expression foreign on her face. "You're supposed to be dead."
"I am." His eyes held that terrifying clarity she'd forgotten—the spy's gaze, sharp as knife. "This is just borrowed time."
The pyramid always claimed its own. Whatever pyramid it was.
Mikhail's thumb traced the scar on her wrist—souvenir from the night they'd almost died together. "They're still watching. The people who burned me."
"Stay dead then. Stay away."
"I can't." His voice dropped, intimate as a confession. "They're building something here. Under the data centers. Needs a friend on the inside. Someone who still knows how to see."
Zombie Elena clicked back to life, just like that. The routine evaporated, revealing the hunger beneath—blood pumping, synapses firing, something dangerously like hope.
"You never could let sleeping gods lie."
"Some pyramids are meant to be raided." Mikhail's grin was wicked, alive, everything she'd lost. "Come back to the world of the living, El. Just once more. For old times."
She took the drive. The zombie died; the spy woke up. Some friendships, after all, were worth dying for twice.
