The Connection We Make

The goldfish circled its bowl in the corner of the room, orange scales catching the afternoon light through the window. Elena watched it for a long moment before turning back to the cable box she'd been trying to fix for forty minutes. Another disconnection—another frayed wire in a life that seemed increasingly composed of them.

Marcus was in the bedroom packing. She could hear the hangers sliding along the rod, the soft thud of shoes being dropped into his duffel. They'd fought about nothing that morning, which meant they were fighting about everything. The accumulation of twelve years together, dissolving over cold coffee and unspoken resentments.

"I'm taking the cat," he'd said, and she'd nodded because what could she say? Luna had always been his cat anyway—she'd curl up on his chest while he worked, ignore Elena completely except when it was time to eat. Some days Elena felt more like staff than co-owner.

The television flickered to life suddenly, reality show hosts laughing at something unfunny. Elena sat back on her heels, stunned by the sudden noise. She'd done it—she'd fixed the cable. But the victory felt hollow.

Marcus appeared in the doorway, Luna in his arms. The cat regarded Elena with cool indifference, already gone.

"It works," Elena said, gesturing at the television.

"Good," he said. "That's good."

They stood there, married strangers, connected by nothing but the cat in his arms and the cable humming behind them. The goldfish continued its endless circling, unaware that the world was ending again, as it always did, as it always would.

"You could stay for dinner," she heard herself say. "I could make that pasta you like."

Marcus shifted his weight. Luna stirred in his arms, purring. The moment stretched thin as a wire about to snap.

"Okay," he said finally. "Okay."

The goldfish swam on. The cat settled in his arms. The cable brought them stories about other people's lives, lives where things were simpler, where love didn't fray like cheap wire, where disconnection was something that happened to other people. Elena pressed play on the remote and began again.
