The Cloud Kingdom's Secret Game

One rainy afternoon, young Lily looked up at the gray sky and wondered what the clouds were hiding. While other children stayed inside, Lily pressed her nose against the window, watching raindrops race down the glass like tiny swimmers in a competition.

"I wish I could see what's happening up there," she whispered.

Suddenly, a beam of lightning flashed so bright it seemed to wink at her. Then something magical happened—the lightning didn't fade away. Instead, it stretched down like a glowing golden rope, right to her windowsill.

Lily's heart raced. She knew she should stay inside, but curiosity pulled her like a magnet. Carefully, she touched the lightning rope with one finger. ZAP! Instead of hurting, it felt like a warm tingle, like bubble wrap popping.

The rope lifted her gently, higher and higher, until she floated right into the clouds. And there, she couldn't believe her eyes—a whole kingdom made of puffy white castles, with rivers of rainbow water flowing through them.

"Hey! You're late for the game!" shouted a boy with hair made of cotton candy. "We need one more player for swimming baseball!"

"Swimming baseball?" Lily asked, amazed.

"Sure!" the boy grinned, handing her a bat made of solidified cloud. "You hit the ball into the rainbow river, then swim after it! Whoever brings it back first wins!"

Lily had played baseball at school, but she'd never been very fast on land. Here, floating in the air and diving through waterfalls, she felt light as a feather. She swung the cloud bat—WOOSH—and the ball (which turned out to be a glowing pearl) sailed into the rainbow river.

SPLASH! Lily dove in, swimming faster than she ever had before. The water tasted like strawberries and felt like a warm blanket. She grabbed the pearl just as another player reached for it.

"She wins!" cheered the cloud children. Lightning crackled across the sky like fireworks celebrating her victory.

"You're a natural," the cotton-haired boy said. "Will you come back tomorrow? We play every time it rains on Earth."

Lily promised she would. As the lightning rope lowered her home, she realized something wonderful: sometimes the things that seem ordinary—even a boring, rainy day—can be magical if you know where to look. From that day on, whenever she heard thunder, Lily smiled, knowing her friends were playing above, and she couldn't wait for the next rain to join them again.
