The Chop Heard 'Round the Diamond

Maya's hands shook as she held the scissors. Three inches of dark curls pooled in the bathroom sink like dead things. She kept cutting.

"You're actually doing it," Leo said from the doorway, leaning against the frame with that half-smirk he always wore. "Your mom's gonna freak."

"Whatever." Another snip. More hair fell. "It's just hair. It grows back."

Leo didn't mention that she'd been growing it out since sixth grade. He didn't mention that she looked like herself now—sharp edges, no more hiding. That's why he was her best friend. He got it without her having to explain everything.

"Big game tonight," he said instead. "Coach says if we win, we're playoff bound."

"I'll be there." Maya met his eyes in the mirror. Something electric passed between them, quick as a spark. "Wouldn't miss it."

The baseball diamond hummed under Friday night lights when Maya arrived. Her newfound short hair caught the wind, bizarre and freeing. She felt raw, exposed, powerful. Like she'd finally peeled off a skin that never fit.

Leo spotted her in the stands and did a double-take. A grin spread across his face—real, surprised, like he was seeing her for the first time too. He adjusted his cap, threw a warm-up pitch that cracked against the catcher's mitt.

She'd spent thirteen years wanting him to notice her. Funny how it took chopping off half her hair to realize she'd been the one waiting to be noticed by herself.

"You look..." Leo found her after the game, jersey stained with dirt and triumph, "...like you're not messing around anymore."

"Yeah." Maya smiled, feeling the evening breeze against her neck. No more hiding. "I think I'm done with that."

He held her gaze longer than necessary. Something shifted between them—friendship cracking open into something new and unspoken.

"Good," Leo said softly. "That's really good."
