The Chlorine and Broken Things

The party at the CEO's house was everything Maya hated about corporate life—manufactured fun around an infinity pool that nobody actually wanted to swim in. She was running on three hours of sleep and the kind of despair that comes from realizing you're thirty-five and still chasing promotions that won't fix anything.

She'd retreated to the edge of the pool, nursing lukewarm wine and trying to disappear, when David sat beside her. David from accounting, who always wore that stupid fishing hat on casual Fridays and never spoke in meetings. The same David whose wife had left him six months ago—she'd heard the gossip in the breakroom, the whispers about how he'd just stopped showing up for life.

"Came out here to escape too?" he asked, not looking at her.

"My boss tried to explain synergy to me using synchronized swimming as a metaphor. I needed air."

He laughed, short and surprised. "I got cat sitting duty. House is being renovated. Figured I could bear three hours of forced networking for the overtime pay."

"You hate overtime."

"I hate a lot of things. The overtime pays for the divorce lawyer."

Maya looked at him then—really looked. The hat was ridiculous, but the lines around his eyes were real. They sat there as the party faded behind them, two people who'd stopped pretending this was anything but survival.

"I'm running away next weekend," she found herself saying. "Just getting in my car and driving until I hit water. Want to come?"

David turned, and for the first time, he seemed like someone who might actually say yes.

The pool reflected lights that neither of them were watching anymore.
