The Charging Cable

Mara watched Elena across the table, picking at her spinach salad with the same precision she'd once applied to climbing the corporate pyramid. They hadn't seen each other in three years—not since Elena's promotion to Vice President, not since the friend Mara had known had been systematically replaced by someone who wore power suits and spoke in ROI.

"You look good," Elena said, and there was something like genuine warmth in her voice. But her eyes kept darting to her iPhone, face-down on the table like a guilty secret.

"So do you." Mara lied. "The VP life suits you."

Elena laughed, but it didn't reach her eyes. "It's exhausting. Every day feels like I'm building something that could crush me if I blink wrong." She gestured vaguely with her fork. "Remember when we talked about changing the world? Now I just change stock prices."

Her phone buzzed. Elena flipped it over, screen illuminating her face with harsh blue light. Mara watched her friend's expression shift—something fractured and desperate flashing across those polished features before she could smooth it away.

"Everything okay?" Mara asked.

"Fine. Just... work." Elena's thumb hovered over the screen. "They never stop calling, you know? Even at 8 PM on a Tuesday." She reached for the charging cable snaking across the restaurant table, plugged it in like she was plugging into something larger than herself—like she was the one being charged, not the device.

Mara thought about the spinach wilting on her plate, about the way success had made Elena translucent, about the pyramid scheme of ambition that promised fulfillment at the top but only delivered thinner air.

"You could walk away," Mara said softly. "Like you used to talk about."

Elena looked at her then, really looked at her. "Could I?" She gestured at the phone, the cable, the invisible tether. "I'm not sure I remember how."

The check came. They split it, old friends dividing the cost of a meal they'd both barely touched. Outside, the city hummed with the electricity of a million people plugged into something they couldn't name. Elena's phone buzzed again. She didn't look down.
