The Catfishing Pyramid Scheme

Maya's phone buzzed on her nightstand at 11:47 PM—Jordan, again.

"bro u have to see this," the text read. "my cousin's making 2k/month selling these skincare sets it's actually insane"

Maya groaned into her pillow. This was the fourth time this week. Her best friend had fallen deep into what was obviously a pyramid scheme, but Jordan wouldn't hear it. "It's not a pyramid, it's MULTI-LEVEL MARKETING," Jordan had insisted at lunch yesterday, dramatically waving her vegan cronchwrap around for emphasis.

The next afternoon, Maya sat cross-legged on Jordan's bedroom floor, surrounded by tiny samples of "radiance elixir" and posters with girls who had suspiciously perfect skin. Jordan's cat, Mango—a blob of orange fur with trust issues—sat on the bed, judging them silently.

"All you have to do is sign up three people," Jordan said, eyes wide with that terrifying enthusiasm. "Then THEY sign up three people, and you get commission on the whole downline. My cousin says she's almost at director level."

Maya stared at the cat. Even Mango looked like he knew this was a terrible idea.

"Jordan," Maya said softly. "that's literally what a pyramid is."

"You're just negative!" Jordan snapped, then instantly softened. "Sorry. I just—I really want this to work. My parents are already talking about how I need to 'get serious' about college applications and I feel like I'm drowning."

Something shifted in Maya's chest. This wasn't about the skincare. It was about the panic of fifteen, the terrifying sense that everyone else had life figured out while you were just flailing.

"Okay," Maya said. "But instead of this, let's start that TikTok account you've been talking about. The cat one."

Jordan blinked. "What?"

"Mango's unhinged. We could film him being a menace and actually make content. No startup costs, no weird downlines." Maya paused. "I'll be your first follower. Like, an actual friend, not a customer."

Jordan stared at her cat, who chose that moment to knock an entire stack of skincare samples off the bed. They watched them shatter across the floor.

Jordan started laughing. Really laughing—the kind where you can't breathe and your face hurts.

"Okay," she said, wiping tears from her eyes. "okay, you're right. This was dumb."

"It's not dumb to want something," Maya said. "You just deserve better than a pyramid scheme."

Later that night, Mango walked across Maya's phone while she was editing their first TikTok. The caption read: "POV: your cat is more chaotic than your life decisions." By morning, it had 50,000 views.
