The Catfish Incident
Liam stood by the edge of the pool, clutching his phone like a lifeline. The summer bash was in full swing - kids from school everywhere, music bumping, and way too much happening at once. He'd only come because Maya practically dragged him here.
"Just talk to people, Liam. You're not gonna die," she'd said earlier. Easy for her to say - Maya had been popular since seventh grade. Liam, meanwhile, had spent freshman year perfecting the art of becoming invisible in hallways.
Then he saw her - Zoey Chen, from his English class, sitting alone on a lounge chair. She looked as out of place as he felt. Before he could overthink it, Liam found himself wandering over.
"Hey," he managed. "Having... fun?" Smooth. Really smooth.
Zoey looked up, surprised. "Oh! Hey, Liam. Honestly? I was just watching everyone play padel over there and wishing I was brave enough to join in."
"Same," Liam admitted, feeling weirdly relieved. "I've been hiding by the snack table for an hour."
She laughed, and something shifted. They ended up talking about everything - their shared dread of math class, their obsession with the same indie band, how neither of them felt like they fit in anywhere.
Then came the weird part. A stray cat - calico, kind of scrawny - strolled out of nowhere and hopped onto the diving board, like it owned the place.
"Um," Zoey said. "Is that... a cat?"
The cat sat down and started licking its paw, completely unbothered by the teenagers staring at it.
Someone's hat - a backwards baseball cap - blew off a nearby chair and landed right next to the cat. The cat flinched, then decided the hat made a better pillow and curled up on it.
"Okay that's actually iconic," Zoey said, pulling out her phone. "We have to document this."
"Wait," Liam said, suddenly inspired. "Hold this." He grabbed a slice of papaya from the fruit platter (seriously, who brought papaya?) and carefully approached the diving board. The cat perked up at the smell, stretched, and -奇迹 - actually ate from his hand.
"You're like a cat whisperer," Zoey said, and there was something in her voice that made Liam's stomach flip in a good way.
They ended up spending the rest of the party together, eventually convincing Maya to let them adopt the cat (they named it Papaya, obviously). And when Liam finally got home that night, he checked his phone to find a new contact: "Zoey (Pool Party & Cat Whisperer) 😻" with a text: "Same time next weekend?"
For the first time ever, Liam thought maybe high school wouldn't be so bad after all.
