The Cat With Baseball Fur
Maya hated her hair. It was big and fluffy and stuck out everywhere, like a brown cloud that had exploded above her head. Kids at school called her Hair-ya, which wasn't her name.
One afternoon, Maya sat behind the baseball diamond, watching the older kids play. She loved baseball but never joined in — her hair always got in the way, flying into her eyes when she ran.
Suddenly, something soft brushed against her arm. A calico cat with the most unusual fur hopped onto the bench beside her. Its orange and black patches were arranged in perfect little circles, just like a baseball!
"You're funny looking," Maya said, smiling.
The cat purred and blinked its golden eyes. Then something magical happened — the cat's fur began to spin, and tiny stitched seams appeared, making it look exactly like a miniature baseball.
Maya gasped. The cat trotted onto the empty field and turned into a real baseball! Maya picked it up, and suddenly she knew exactly what to do. She threw the ball toward home plate, and it curved magically through the air before landing perfectly in the grass.
The cat reappeared, fur spinning, seams showing. It wanted to PLAY!
Maya forgot about her hair. She ran, she threw, she caught, and her big fluffy hair whipped around wildly — but it didn't matter. The cat could always find her because her hair acted like a colorful flag, signaling exactly where she was on the field.
"Your hair isn't messy," a boy's voice said. Maya turned to see one of the older players smiling at her. "It's like a superhero cape. It makes you easy to spot."
The cat purred and rubbed against Maya's legs, its baseball-pattern fur glowing in the sunset. For the first time, Maya flipped her hair proudly. Some things that seem like problems are actually gifts in disguise.
