The Cat Who Watched Sundays
Margaret sat on her back porch, watching her grandson Henry splash in the backyard pool. The summer sun warmed her arthritic knees, and for a moment, the years dissolved like sugar in tea.
"You're swimming just like your great-grandfather did," she called out, her voice carrying across the water.
Henry paused, treading water. "You knew Grandpa when he was little?"
Margaret smiled, thinking of Sarah—her best friend from childhood, the one who'd convinced her that the old swimming hole behind Miller's barn wasn't deep enough to drown a mouse, let alone two adventurous girls with patched-overalls and braided hair. They'd spent entire summers there, floating on their backs like two water bugs, watching clouds drift into shapes of horses and castles.
But the real star of those Sundays was Barnaby, Sarah's peculiar orange cat. Most cats avoided water like it was poison, but Barnaby would perch on the wooden dock, tail curled neatly around his paws, watching them swim as if he were a lifeguard on duty. When they'd dive deep, he'd lean forward, whiskers twitching with concern. When they surfaced, laughing and sputtering, he'd blink slowly—his version of approval.
"Cats don't swim, Margaret," Sarah would say, scratching Barnaby's ears. "But they know a thing or two about courage."
That same cat lived to be twenty-two, long after Sarah had moved west and Margaret had married, raised children, and buried a husband. When Margaret's own daughter brought home a kitten, she named it Barnaby. When her grandchildren asked about courage, she told them about a cat who faced his fear by simply watching others face theirs.
Now, watching Henry's friends arrive for his birthday party—laughter, splashing, the joy of being young and unafraid—Margaret realized something Sarah had tried to tell her all those years ago: friendship isn't about swimming the same water together. It's about watching from the dock, still caring, still present, even when the distance between you grows too wide to cross.
Barnaby would have approved.
