The Cat Who Unlocked the Stars

Mittens was no ordinary cat. While other cats chased mice and napped in sunbeams, Mittens loved to sit on her window sill at midnight, watching the stars twinkle like tiny diamonds.

One particularly moonlit night, something magical happened. The great stone **sphinx** statue that had stood in the park for centuries began to glow with a soft, golden light. Curious as ever, Mittens crept out her cat door and padded silently across the dewy grass toward the glowing monument.

As she approached, the sphinx's stone eyes opened, revealing deep, wise pools of starlight. "Little one," the sphinx spoke in a voice like rustling leaves, "I have been trapped here for a thousand years, waiting for someone pure of heart to help me. My sister sphinxes across the world are calling me home to the stars, but I cannot leave until someone solves my riddle."

"What is the riddle?" Mittens asked, her tail twitching with excitement.

"I am small but mighty, I have nine lives but live only one, I see in the dark but love the light. What am I?"

Mittens thought hard. She knew the answer! But just as she opened her mouth to speak, a giant shadow emerged from behind the trees. It was Bruno, the gentle **bear** who lived in the forest beyond the park.

"I shall help you, little friend," Bruno rumbled softly. Together, the cat and the bear sat before the sphinx, and Mittens proudly declared, "You are describing a cat!"

The sphinx smiled, and her stone body began to transform into pure starlight. "Correct! But you see, I needed both of you—the courage of a cat and the strength of a bear. Now I can finally return to my sisters in the night sky."

As the sphinx ascended to become a new constellation, she granted them each a gift: Mittens received the ability to understand all creatures, and Bruno received the gift of never needing to hibernate alone.

From that night on, the cat, the bear, and the sphinx constellation remained the best of friends. And every night, when you look up at the stars, you can still see the Sphinx winking down at her two faithful guardians, reminding all who look up that true friendship can unlock even the most magical doors.
