The Cat Who Texted from Egypt

Lily was eating her orange vitamin when something strange happened. Her cat, Whiskers, jumped onto the kitchen table and batted at her mom's iPhone.

"Don't touch that!" Lily said, but the phone lit up by itself. Words appeared on the screen: HELLO LILY. I AM WHISKERS.

Lily gasped. Her cat could text! Whiskers purred and tapped more letters: I HAVE A SECRET. COME TO THE ATTIC.

Lily's heart raced as she followed Whiskers up the stairs. The attic was dusty and full of old boxes, but in the corner stood a beautiful golden statue of a sphinx — a creature with a lion's body and a human head.

"Finally," the sphinx spoke in a voice like chimes. "We've been waiting centuries for someone who would listen."

"You can talk?" Lily asked.

"We can do many things," the sphinx said. "Whiskers is my messenger. He's been watching you. You're kind to animals, you help your little brother, and you never forget your vitamins."

"Because they're yummy," Lily said.

The sphinx smiled. "Because taking care of yourself shows you care about the world. Now, would you like to see something magical?"

Lily nodded eagerly.

The sphinx's stone eyes began to glow. "In ancient Egypt, I was guardian of friendship. I protected children who valued true friendship over gold or toys. But I fell asleep for a very long time. Whiskers woke me when he found you — someone who would understand."

"Understand what?" Lily whispered.

"That friendship is the strongest magic," the sphinx said. "A true friend notices when someone is sad. A true friend shares. A true friend is loyal, like Whiskers has been to you."

Whiskers rubbed against Lily's legs, purring loudly.

"I want to be that kind of friend," Lily said solemnly.

"You already are," the sphinx said. "But now you have a special gift. Whenever you need wisdom about friendship, just ask Whiskers to send me a message on your phone."

"Really?" Lily's eyes widened.

"Really. But promise me something — never forget that taking care of yourself makes you a better friend. Your vitamins, your sleep, your happiness... they matter too."

"I promise," Lily said.

The sphinx's eyes glowed brighter one last time, then returned to stone. Whiskers meowed and trotted toward the stairs.

Lily followed her magical cat downstairs, her heart full of wonder. That night, she dreamed of deserts and pyramids, and when she woke, her mom's iPhone had one new text message: THANK YOU FOR BEING OUR FRIEND.

Lily smiled, took her vitamin, and scratched Whiskers behind the ears. Some friendships, she realized, were truly magical — especially the ones that had been waiting just for her.
