The Cat Who Swam with Storms

Mittens was no ordinary cat. While other cats napped in sunbeams, she watched storms.

One evening, as lightning flashed across the purple sky, Mittens saw something strange. A glowing baseball rolled across her yard, pulsing with light with every lightning bolt. But it wasn't rolling on grass—it was rolling on water!

Mittens crept closer. The baseball hovered above a puddle that shimmered like liquid silver. When lightning struck again, the puddle grew into a pool, then a pond, then a magnificent lake that appeared only during storms.

"Come in!" a deep voice rumbled like distant thunder.

From the depths emerged a massive bull with a coat like storm clouds and horns that sparked with tiny lightning bolts. "I'm Thunder," the bull said gently. "And you must be the curious cat I've heard about from the lightning bugs."

Mittens' tail twitched with excitement. "Can you really swim?"

"Not swim," Thunder smiled. "We storm-walk. Want to try?"

Mittens dipped one paw in the magical water. Instead of getting wet, her paw glowed with golden light. She stepped in—and began floating! The water held her up like it was solid, yet she moved through it like she was flying.

"Now," Thunder said, nudging the glowing baseball. "The real fun begins. Every lightning strike powers this ball. When it flashes, you hit it, and wherever it lands, a wish comes true."

Mittens' golden eyes widened. A game of wishes?

CRACK! Lightning flashed. Thunder tossed the ball. Mittens leaped, her paws batting it through the air. It soared higher and higher until another lightning bolt caught it like an outfielder, and the ball exploded into a thousand sparkles that rained down like stars.

Each sparkle became something magical: butterflies, flowers, sweet treats. Mittens laughed, a sound like tiny bells.

They played until the storm passed. As the sun peeked through clouds, the magical lake began to fade.

"Will you come back?" Thunder asked.

"Every storm," Mittens promised.

As the lake disappeared into mist, Mittens realized something wonderful: sometimes the scariest things—like storms—hide the most magical adventures. You just have to be brave enough to take the first step.

Or in her case, the first paw.

From that night on, whenever lightning painted the sky, Mittens knew something magical was waiting. And she was never afraid of storms again.
