The Cat Who Swam with Stars

Lily pressed her nose against the cool glass of the kitchen window, watching the morning mist swirl around the backyard pool. Today was the first day of summer, and she had big plans. Big, wet, wonderful plans.

"Are you still staring at that water?" her mother called from the hallway. "Breakfast is ready!"

But Lily couldn't move. Because there, perched on the pool's edge like a fluffy statue, sat the most unusual cat she had ever seen. Its fur shimmered like moonlight, and its eyes held the depth of entire galaxies.

Lily slipped outside in her bare feet. The cat didn't run away. Instead, it dipped one paw into the water, and ripples of silver light spread across the surface.

"I'm Cosmos," the cat said. "And I've been waiting for you."

Lily gasped. "You can talk?"

"I can do many things," Cosmos purred. "Including this."

To Lily's astonishment, the cat stepped onto the water and began swimming—not like a normal cat, but gliding as if the pool had turned to stardust. "Come with me," Cosmos called. "There's a whole world beneath the surface."

Lily hesitated. She'd been taking swimming lessons for months, but she still felt nervous in deep water. "I... I'm not very good yet."

"Being good isn't about being perfect," Cosmos said. "It's about being brave enough to try. That's what makes someone a true friend to themselves."

Taking a deep breath, Lily slid into the pool. The water felt different—warmer, softer, like being wrapped in a hug. With Cosmos swimming beside her, she didn't feel afraid anymore. She felt magical.

They swam together through the enchanted pool, discovering coral made of crystal and fish that sang like tiny bells. Lily realized she was doing all the strokes her instructor had taught her, but without effort, without fear. She was actually swimming!

When Lily's mother called her for lunch, Cosmos reluctantly swam to the edge. "I must go back to the sky now," the cat said. "But remember—whenever you swim, I'm swimming with you."

Lily watched the silver cat dissolve into sparkles that floated upward toward the sun. She climbed out of the pool, shivering but smiling.

That summer, Lily became the best swimmer in her class. But whenever anyone asked how she learned so quickly, she just smiled. Because some friendships are too magical to explain—even to a best friend.

And on nights when the moon was full, if you looked closely at the pool, you could still see ripples of silver light, dancing on the water like the memory of a cat who swam with stars.
