The Cat Who Swam with Orange Stars
Mittens was no ordinary cat. While other cats chased mice and napped in sunny patches, Mittens dreamed of something bigger—she wanted to go swimming.
Every morning, the little orange tabby would pad softly to the edge of Palm Tree Pond, where a giant palm tree leaned over the water like a friendly umbrella. The pond sparkled in the sunlight, and Mittens would watch the ripples dance.
"Silly cat," the other animals would say. "Cats don't swim! Cats stay dry and keep their paws clean."
But Mittens knew better. She had seen something magical in that pond.
One hot afternoon, when the sun painted everything golden, Mittens finally gathered her courage. She dipped one paw into the cool water. Then another. Soon, she was paddling happily, surprised by how naturally swimming came to her!
Suddenly, the water glowed with orange light. A tiny goldfish with scales like tiny stars swam right up to her face.
"Hello, brave friend," the goldfish bubbled. "I've been waiting for someone like you."
"You can talk?" Mittens asked, her whiskers twitching with wonder.
"In Palm Tree Pond, anything is possible," the goldfish replied with a smile. "My name is Coral. Would you like to see my secret world?"
Mittens nodded, her heart racing with excitement. Together, they dove deeper than she had ever dared. The water became warm and filled with tiny orange fish that glowed like underwater stars. Mittens had never felt so alive.
"This is amazing!" Mittens exclaimed. "But why did you wait for me?"
Coral swam close to Mittens' ear. "Because sometimes, the bravest thing you can do is try something everyone says you can't do. You showed courage, Mittens. That's a special kind of magic."
When Mittens finally swam back to shore, her fur was wet but her heart was full. The other animals gathered around, amazed.
"How did you do it?" they asked.
Mittens looked at her palm—that part of her paw had touched the magical water first—and smiled. "Sometimes, you have to dive in to discover what you're capable of."
From that day on, Mittens visited her friend Coral often, teaching all the other animals that sometimes the most wonderful adventures begin when you're brave enough to try something new.
And somewhere deep in Palm Tree Pond, a tiny orange goldfish smiled, knowing she had found the most wonderful friend of all.
