The Cat Who Swam with Lightning
Maya was sitting by the pond when she saw the most peculiar sight. A small orange cat was paddling through the water, chasing dragonflies with graceful strokes. Maya had never seen a swimming cat before!
"Hello there!" Maya called out, waving.
The cat paused, shook water from its whiskers, and swam to shore. That's when Maya noticed something magical—tiny sparks of blue light danced around the cat's fur, like miniature stars.
"I'm Bolt," said the cat, much to Maya's surprise. "And you're watching me swim."
Maya's eyes widened. "You can talk?"
"Only to special friends," Bolt purred. "Would you like to see something amazing?"
Nodding eagerly, Maya followed Bolt to an old oak tree. The cat touched his nose to a hollow in the trunk, and suddenly the whole pond began to glow.
"Watch!" Bolt meowed.
A bolt of lightning shot from the sky—unlike any Maya had ever seen. It was rainbow-colored and didn't strike the ground. Instead, it danced across the water's surface, creating ripples of sparkling light.
"The lightning remembers me," Bolt explained. "When I was a kitten, I saved a baby bird during a storm. The lightning was so grateful, it gave me and my friends the power to swim like fish and speak to kind children."
Maya reached out and touched Bolt's wet fur. More magical sparks swirled around them both.
"Can we be friends too?" Maya asked.
Bolt's amber eyes sparkled. "Already are. Friends help each other, don't they?"
From that day on, Maya visited the pond every afternoon. She and Bolt would swim together while lightning performed beautiful light shows just for them. Maya learned that magic exists everywhere—you just need a friend to show you where to look.
And sometimes, she discovered, the most extraordinary friendships come from the most unexpected places.
