The Cat Who Swam Through Stars

Lily sat alone in her backyard, tossing her baseball up and catching it again. Her mom had said she'd make friends at the new park, but nobody wanted to play with the new girl. The sun began to set, painting the sky pink and orange.

A soft meow made her jump. A calico cat with emerald eyes padded through the fence, carrying something shiny in its mouth. It dropped the object at Lily's feet—a baseball that glowed like a tiny moon.

"You can swim?" Lily asked, surprised, as the cat hopped onto her raft in the above-ground pool. But instead of sinking, the cat began paddling through the air as if it were water, leaving sparkles wherever it paws touched.

The cat meowed and nudged the glowing baseball. Lily threw it, and something magical happened. The ball didn't fall down—it floated upward, leaving ripples through the sky like a stone skipping across a pond.

The cat leaped, swimming through the air to catch it, but missed. The ball kept floating higher and higher, joining the first stars appearing in the twilight. Each star was actually a glowing baseball, waiting to be caught.

The cat looked at Lily with its emerald eyes and meowed again, as if saying, "Your turn."

Lily climbed onto the raft. The cat touched her nose with its paw, and suddenly Lily could feel it—the air became like warm water around her. She kicked off the raft and swam through the sky.

Together, she and the cat played the most wonderful game of catch among the stars. They weren't just a lonely girl and a stray cat anymore. They were teammates, friends, magical explorers in a sky-kingdom nobody else knew existed.

As the moon rose, they swam back down, tired but happy. The cat curled up beside Lily on the grass, its purr sounding like distant starlight twinkling.

"Tomorrow," Lily whispered, scratching behind the cat's ears. "We'll teach the other kids how to swim through the stars. Then they won't just be classmates. They'll be our friends too."

The cat meowed in agreement, and Lily knew that sometimes the best adventures—and the best friends—come when you least expect them.
