The Cat Who Swam Through Lightning
Lily loved her purple hat more than anything in the world. It had belonged to her grandmother, and Lily believed it held magical powers. One rainy afternoon, she placed the hat on her porch to catch some raindrops.
That's when she saw the cat—a scruffy orange tabby with bright green eyes, shivering under a bush. Lily had always wanted a friend, and this cat looked like she needed one too.
"Come here, kitty," Lily whispered, holding out her hand.
The cat crept closer, then something magical happened. As lightning flashed across the sky, the cat's fur began to glow with golden light. She spoke! "Thank you for being kind to me. I'm Sparkle."
Lily gasped but didn't run away. "You can talk!"
"Only during lightning storms," Sparkle purred. "And only to kind children like you. Want to see something wonderful?"
The cat nudged the purple hat toward Lily. "Put it on and make a wish!"
Lily placed the hat on her head and closed her eyes. "I wish I could go swimming in the sky!"
Suddenly, another bolt of lightning struck nearby—WHAM!—and Lily felt lighter than air. When she opened her eyes, she and Sparkle were floating above her neighborhood, swimming through fluffy clouds that felt like cotton candy.
The lightning wasn't scary anymore. It was beautiful, dancing around them like ribbons of silver and gold. Other magical cats appeared—some blue, some pink, some with stars on their fur—all swimming through the storm.
"We're Cloud Cats," Sparkle explained. "We appear when children need friends most."
They swam and played until the storm passed, then landed softly back in Lily's yard. The purple hat had changed too—now it had tiny lightning bolts embroidered around the brim.
"Will I ever see you again?" Lily asked, hugging Sparkle goodbye.
Sparkle touched her nose to Lily's forehead. "Whenever you wear your special hat and wish for me, I'll come. We're friends forever now."
From that day on, Lily was never lonely. She had the best friend in the world, a magical hat, and a secret that made every rainstorm an adventure waiting to happen.
And whenever she saw lightning, she knew Sparkle was swimming through the clouds, thinking of her too.
