The Cat Who Swam Through Lightning

catswimminglightning

Barnaby was a small orange cat with the softest fur in all of Meadowbrook. But Barnaby had a secret wish — he wanted to swim. Every day, he watched the ducks paddle across the pond. "Someday," he whispered, "someday I'll swim too."

One summer evening, the sky turned purple. Storm clouds gathered like giant cotton balls, and soon rain pitter-pattered against Barnaby's window. Then came the lightning — great crackling bolts that danced across the sky.

Barnaby's person, little Lily, was afraid. She hid under her blanket. But Barnaby felt curious. He crept to the window and pressed his paw against the glass.

Something magical happened. The lightning wasn't hot or scary at all. It shimmered like golden ribbons, calling to him. Without thinking, Barnaby pressed his nose to the glass... and POP!

He was outside, floating in the air. The lightning wasn't dangerous — it was like warm water, glowing and shimmering all around him. Barnaby did what he'd always dreamed of. He began swimming, paddling his paws through the crackling golden light.

"You're doing it!" squeaked a tiny voice. A lightning bug zipped beside him, glowing brighter than ever. "I'm Spark! Want to race?"

Barnaby and Spark zoomed through the stormy sky, doing loops and splashes through the lightning bolts. Far below, Lily peeked from her window. She wasn't scared anymore — she was amazed. Her cat was flying!

But Barnaby saw something sad. A family of birds was huddled in their nest, getting soaked. Their nest was leaking.

"Spark!" Barnaby called. "We have to help!"

Together, cat and lightning bug used the glowing lightning to weave a special shield over the nest. It shimmered like a golden umbrella, keeping the little birds dry and warm.

Exhausted but happy, Barnaby swam back to his window and POP — he was inside again, curled up beside Lily. She wrapped her arms around his wet fur.

"You were flying," she whispered. "I saw you."

Barnaby purred. Sometimes, he thought, the things we're afraid of — like storms and trying new things — can become the most magical adventures of all. And the best adventures are the ones where you help friends along the way.
