The Cat Who Swam in Stars

Lily had the most bright orange hair in her whole school. It shimmered like sunset clouds, but she didn't like it. The other children had brown hair or black hair or yellow hair—normal colors. Every morning, Lily tried to hide her orange hair under a big hat.

One afternoon, Lily sat by the ocean, tossing little stones into the waves. Something brushed against her hand. She jumped!

A cat! But not a regular cat. This cat had fur the exact same orange as her hair, and it was paddling through the water as if it had been swimming forever.

"You have beautiful hair," said the cat.

Lily stared. "You can talk?"

"I can do many things," the cat purred. "I'm Barnaby. Would you like to see where I go swimming?"

Before Lily could answer, Barnaby tapped her nose with his paw. *POOF!* Suddenly they were underwater, but Lily could breathe!

All around her, the ocean glowed with tiny lights—like stars, but underwater. Fish with shimmering scales swam in spirals. Seashells hummed gentle melodies.

Then Lily noticed something amazing. Her orange hair was glowing! It lit up the whole underwater kingdom, making all the colors dance brighter.

"Your hair is special," Barnaby said, swimming beside her. "Only people with magic hair can visit the Star Sea. We need your light."

A baby sea turtle approached, looking scared. Its path home was dark. Lily's glowing orange hair showed the way through the shadows, and the turtle found its family.

"Thank you!" the turtle family chirped.

Barnaby and Lily swam back to the shore. As Lily stepped onto the sand, something felt different. She took off her hat and let her orange hair shine in the sunlight.

"Will you come back?" Barnaby asked.

"Every day," Lily promised, smiling.

Now Lily never hid her hair again. Because the thing that made her different was the very thing that made her magical.
