The Cat Who Swam in Orange Stars

Mittens was no ordinary cat. While other cats chased mice and napped in sunbeams, Mittens dreamed of magic.

One summer afternoon, Mittens discovered something extraordinary in Mrs. Higgins' backyard. An orange had fallen from the old tree, but this wasn't like any orange she'd ever seen. It glowed with a soft, golden light, as if tiny stars were trapped inside its peel.

When Mittens touched it with her paw, the orange rolled toward the garden pool. But this wasn't just any pool. Under the moonlight, the water shimmered like liquid silver, and sometimes—just sometimes—Mittens thought she saw fish made of rainbows swimming beneath the surface.

The orange bobbed on the water, then suddenly sank. Bubbles rose, popping with tiny sparkles. Mittens couldn't resist. She dipped one paw in, then another, and soon the brave cat was swimming!

Something magical happened. The pool water turned the color of sunset orange, and Mittens began to float upward, higher and higher, until she was swimming among actual stars! Each star was a tiny glowing orange, and they surrounded her like friendly fireflies.

"You're the first cat who ever believed in us," whispered the stars. "Most grown-ups are too busy to notice magic. But you—you have the heart of an adventurer."

Mittens purred so loudly that the stars giggled. They took her on a journey through galaxies made of orange clouds, past planets shaped like cat toys, and over nebulaas that smelled like tuna fish.

When it was time to return home, the stars gave Mittens a special gift: a single glowing orange that would never rot. Whenever she felt lonely or needed courage, she could hold it and remember her starry friends.

Back in Mrs. Higgins' yard, the pool looked ordinary again. But Mittens knew better. Some magic, she discovered, only reveals itself to those brave enough to believe.

From that day on, Mittens taught all the neighborhood kittens an important lesson: The most wonderful adventures begin when you dare to touch something glowing and take the plunge—paws first!
