The Cat Who Swallowed a Star
Barnaby was a small orange cat with very big ears and an even bigger problem. He had no friend. Not one.
Every day, he watched the children play in the park. He watched the dogs chase balls. He watched the birds sing together in pairs. But Barnaby stayed alone under his favorite oak tree, wishing and wishing for someone to share his adventures with.
One rainy afternoon, Barnaby discovered something peculiar near the old library. A tiny door, no bigger than a teacup, glowed with golden light from inside a hollow tree trunk. Being a curious cat, Barnaby peeked inside.
"Welcome!" squeaked a tiny owl wearing spectacles. "Professor Hoot's Magical Vitamin Shop!"
Barnaby's eyes grew wide. Shelves lined the tree walls, each bottle glowing a different color. There were Flying Vitamins for birds, Swimming Vitamins for fish, even Singing Vitamins for crickets!
"What vitamin do you need, little cat?" Professor Hoot asked kindly.
Barnaby's tail drooped. "I don't need flying or swimming vitamins. I need..." He hesitated. "I need a friend vitamin."
Professor Hoot smiled knowingly. He reached for a shimmering purple bottle. "This is our most special vitamin. It only works for cats with very big hearts."
Barnaby swallowed the vitamin eagerly. But nothing happened. He still felt like regular Barnaby.
"Take it outside," Professor Hoot whispered. "The magic needs fresh air."
Barnaby trotted to the park, still feeling ordinary. But then something strange happened. A butterfly landed on his nose, and instead of running away, Barnaby stayed perfectly still. The butterfly stayed, resting its wings.
A little girl watched, amazed. "Your cat is magic!"
She approached cautiously, and for the first time in his life, Barnaby didn't hide. He let her pet his soft orange fur. Her name was Lily, and she became Barnaby's first friend.
Soon, other children came to meet the gentle cat who butterflies loved. Barnaby wasn't lonely anymore.
Years later, Barnaby realized the truth: there was no magic in that purple bottle. The vitamin had simply given him courage—the courage to stay still, to trust, and to let friendship in. The real magic had been inside his big orange heart all along.
And that, little ones, is the best vitamin of all: the courage to say hello to a potential new friend.
