The Cat Who Stole Summer
The pool shimmered like liquid crystal under the July sun, but Maya stood at the edge in her oversized t-shirt, heart hammering. Everyone else was already swimming—laughing, splashing, being effortlessly cool like they'd been born in chlorine.
"You coming in?" Tyler called. He'd hit a home run at the baseball game yesterday, which apparently made him king of everything now.
"Yeah, just gotta..." Maya's voice caught. She spotted Mr. Whiskers, Mrs. Gable's ancient orange tabby, perched on the fence like a judgmental furry gargoyle. The cat meowed, almost like it understood her social paralysis.
Maya's phone buzzed. GROUP CHAT exploded with texts about Jake's party tomorrow. Everyone was going. She'd lied and said she had family plans, but the truth was, parties were basically her natural habitat's evil twin. She felt like a zombie after finals week—numb, disconnected, moving through motions while everyone else lived their best lives.
"Whatever." She kicked off her flip-flops. The pool water hit her like an electric shock. Cold. Perfect. For three seconds, she forgot about baseball fame and party hierarchies and just existed.
Tyler swam over, grinning. "See? Not so bad."
Maya treaded water, suddenly aware of how close he was. "Yeah. Not so bad."
Mr. Whiskers yawned from his fence throne, entirely unimpressed.
By sunset, Maya was pruned and exhausted and somehow part of the group. They were making plans to raid Jake's party anyway—squad goals, apparently. And for the first time all summer, Maya thought maybe, just maybe, high school wouldn't eat her alive after all.
The cat watched them go, flicking its tail in approval. Summer wasn't over yet.
