The Cat Who Solved the Sphinx's Riddle

Lily loved running through the garden behind her grandmother's house. Her wild red hair streamed behind her like a flame as she raced the wind, laughing as she dodged between sunflowers and hopped over stone paths.

One sunny afternoon, her fluffy gray cat Mittens led her to a place she'd never noticed before—a ancient stone statue half-hidden by ivy. It was a sphinx, with the body of a lion and the face of a wise woman. The sphinx's eyes opened, sparkling like amethysts.

"I have been waiting for someone quick enough to catch my riddle," the sphinx spoke in a voice like rustling leaves.

Mittens sat beside Lily, purring loudly. The sphinx smiled. "I can grant one wish to whoever solves my puzzle. But be warned—I've been here for three hundred years, and many have tried."

"I'm ready!" Lily said bravely.

"What runs but has no legs, grows but has no hair, and makes you strong like spinach?"

Lily thought hard. Her hair bounced as she tapped her chin. Mittens meowed and chased a butterfly, making Lily giggle.

"Wait!" Lily's eyes lit up. "Time! Time runs but has no legs. It grows longer but has no hair. And it makes you strong because the more time you spend practicing, the better you get—like how spinach makes you strong!"

The sphinx's smile widened. "Correct, clever child!"

"My wish," Lily said, taking Mittens' paw, "is that everyone could have a friend as wonderful as my cat."

The sphinx nodded. "A wise wish. Friendship is the greatest magic of all."

That night, Lily fell asleep dreaming of riddles and adventures, with Mittens curled up beside her, her wild red hair spreading across the pillow like a beautiful sunset.
