The Cat Who Saved the Sleeping Garden

Lily's orange cat Munchkin always knew where the magic was hiding.

One hot afternoon, Munchkin darted toward Old Man Jenkins's forgotten garden. Lily followed, her baseball glove still on her hand from practice. The garden looked dead and brown.

"No one's been here in years," Lily whispered.

Munchkin pawed at a strange sign: ZOMBIE GARDEN — DO NOT WATER.

"Zombie?" Lily giggled. "That's silly!"

But then she noticed something amazing. Twisted, brown vines reached toward the sky like sleeping fingers. They weren't dead — they were WAITING.

Lily's friend Mateo appeared, holding his water bottle. "My abuela says zombie plants only wake up for brave kids."

"Brave like us?" Lily asked.

Mateo nodded. "Like us."

The children gathered fallen papayas from a neighboring tree — bright orange gems that smelled like sunshine. Munchkin purred excitedly.

"Ready?" Lily asked.

Together, they squeezed the papaya juice over the sleeping vines. Then they sprinkled water from their bottles, laughing as droplets sparkled like tiny stars.

Suddenly, the brown vines STIRRED.

Lily gasped. The "zombie" plants stretched, yawned, and burst into brilliant green! Magical flowers unfolded — purple, silver, glowing blue!

"They weren't zombies," Mateo said. "They were just lonely."

Munchkin chased a glowing butterfly through the enchanted garden. Lily and Mateo played catch with their baseball, the new flowers dancing with every throw.

That night, Lily learned something wonderful: Sometimes things that seem scary or dead just need friendship, water, and a little courage to wake up beautiful.

Munchkin purred in agreement, dreaming of papaya sunshine and zombie gardens that were never really zombies at all.
