The Cat Who Saved the Secret Garden

Lily's cat, Mittens, was no ordinary cat. While other cats slept in sunbeams or chased mice, Mittens liked to perch high in the old palm tree behind their house, watching everything like a tiny, furry spy.

"What do you see today, Mittens?" Lily called up, shading her eyes with one hand.

Mittens meowed solemnly and twitched her tail toward the fence. Someone was moving into the empty house next door!

But this wasn't just anyone. A grumpy man with a frown like thunderstorms had arrived. And he was doing something strange – every night, he carried boxes into his backyard and covered them with a black tarp. Mittens the cat spy crept closer each night, her green eyes glowing like little lanterns in the dark.

"He's hiding something," Lily whispered to Mittens. "And we're going to find out what."

One moonlit night, Mittens discovered the secret. The grumpy man wasn't hiding treasure – he was building something wonderful. A birdhouse! A beautiful, painted birdhouse with tiny windows and a little roof that looked like a castle tower. But why hide it?

The next morning, Lily marched next door. Mittens followed proudly, her tail held high like a flag.

"Excuse me," Lily said bravely. "Mittens and I saw what you're making."

The man looked surprised. "Oh. I... I was embarrassed. I wanted to make something nice for the birds, but I thought people would laugh at a big man building tiny houses."

"It's beautiful!" Lily cried. "And Mittens thinks so too. She's been watching over you every night."

The man's frown melted into the first smile Lily had ever seen. "Would you like to help me hang it?"

That afternoon, they hung the castle birdhouse together. Birds came immediately – bright yellow ones and blue jays and a tiny red one that sang like a bell.

From her perch in the palm tree, Mittens purred with satisfaction. Being a spy wasn't just about discovering secrets. Sometimes, the best secrets were the ones that brought friends together.

And now, every evening, the grumpy man (who wasn't grumpy anymore) would wave to Lily and Mittens. The cat spy had found the greatest treasure of all – a new friend.
