The Cat Who Saved My Social Life
I was basically functioning like a zombie after staying up until 3 AM scrolling through Jake's profile—again. Which is why, when my phone buzzed during homeroom with "padel tryouts today @ 4," I almost fell out of my chair.
"You're trying out?" Chloe raised an eyebrow as we grabbed lunch. "Since when do you play padel?"
"Since forever," I lied smoothly. "I'm basically low-key prodigy level."
It was fully not true. I'd never held a padel racket in my life. But Jake was on the team, and I was this close to crafting a situation where we'd have to talk.
The tryouts were actually going fine until I face-planted during a sprint. Humiliated, I texted my mom to pick me up early.
"Who's this?" some eighth grader asked, pointing at the calico cat wandering onto the courts.
"That's actually my emotional support animal," I said, without thinking.
By the time I got home, my phone was blowing up. Chloe had posted: "Maya's low-key bringing her ESA to tryouts?? Queen behavior 🐱👏"
Then Jake commented: "wait that cat was actually so cute lol"
And then: "ur actually coming to the party right?"
I spent the rest of the afternoon mentally swimming in possibilities—was this my chance? But then I thought about how exhausted I was, how tired I felt trying to be someone I wasn't.
My actual cat, Pancake, jumped on my bed. I stroked her fur and realized I didn't need to perform for Jake or anyone else.
"Actually," I texted back, "I think I'm gonna chill tonight. But thanks for the invite!"
The response came instantly: "no worries, maybe next time. btw ur cat is iconic"
I might have crashed and burned at padel, but somehow, I still won.
