The Cat Who Saved My Cool
My beat-up baseball cap sat three inches lower than usual, a tactical decision. If anyone saw my eyes darting around the Hernandez's pool party like a trapped squirrel, my social life was officially over.
"Yo Maya! You gonna stand there all day or actually get in?" Leo called from the padel court, shirt somehow already off, sweat making his skin gleam like he'd stepped out of a TikTok filter. The padel ball smacked the fence with that satisfying pop sound that meant he was winning, again.
"Coming!" I lied, adjusting my hat even though it was already pulled down to my nose.
The pool water sparkled like someone had dissolved actual diamonds in it, and everyone looked like they belonged in a music video. Sarah floated on an inflatable flamingo looking like an actual mermaid. Meanwhile, I was currently calculating the exact angle I could slip into the water without my excessive body hair being visible, or splash so catastrophically that I'd become a legend for all the wrong reasons.
Then I saw it—Mr. Whiskers, the Hernandez's ancient orange cat, perched on the patio table like a judgmental fuzzy gargoyle. He stared at my fear like he could smell it through his whiskers.
I inched toward the snacks table, pretending to be deeply fascinated by a bag of Doritos. Mr. Whiskers decided this was his moment. He launched himself from the table, claws extended, directly at my face.
I didn't think. I just reacted—diving sideways into the pool fully clothed, hat flying off, my dignity following close behind.
Silence. Then laughter. Not mean laughter—everyone was cracking up. I surfaced, hair plastered to my forehead, blinking chlorinated water from my eyes. Mr. Whiskers sat on the edge, tail twitching, looking supremely unimpressed.
"Finally!" Leo grinned. "We've been trying to get you in for twenty minutes."
Sarah tossed me my hat, now soggy but still intact. "That was legendary, Maya. 10 out of 10 form."
I doggy-paddled toward the flamingo, my heart racing but for the first time all afternoon, not from anxiety. The water felt amazing. Mr. Whiskers meowed—maybe it was thanks, maybe it was just sass. Either way, my cool was technically gone, but honestly? Being uncool at a pool party beats being too scared to get in the water.
