The Cat Who Saved Halloween
Lily's orange tabby cat Pumpkin was the nosiest pet in the neighborhood. Every evening at sunset, Pumpkin would start running toward the old Miller house at the end of the street. Everyone said the house was haunted by a zombie, but Lily had never believed in ghosts.
One Halloween night, Lily followed her sneaky cat through the creaky gate. There, dancing in the moonlight, was a green-faced zombie groaning and swaying! Lily froze, terrified. But Pumpkin wasn't scared at all. The cat trotted right up to the zombie and began rubbing against his legs, purring loudly.
"I'm not a real zombie," the figure said, pulling off his rubber mask to reveal a kind-faced older man with twinkling blue eyes. "I'm Mr. Miller! I love Halloween so much, I practice my zombie dance every year."
Lily gasped. "But... everyone's scared of your house!"
"That's because I'm too shy to meet anyone," Mr. Miller admitted sadly. "I just wanted to make children happy with spooky decorations, but I think I made them frightened instead."
That's when Lily had an idea. She pulled out her iphone and opened her favorite music app. "May I have this dance, Mr. Miller?" she asked, playing a bouncy Halloween song.
Soon, the whole neighborhood gathered. Children who had been scared of the "zombie house" were now laughing and dancing. Pumpkin ran through the crowd, making everyone giggle as he chased falling leaves.
"Thank you, Lily," Mr. Miller said, handing her a caramel apple. "You and your brave cat taught me something important. Sometimes, the things we're scared of are just lonely people waiting for a friend."
Lily smiled, hugging Pumpkin tight. Some of the best adventures start with a cat, a little courage, and an open heart.
