The Cat Who Raced Lightning

Mittens was a small orange cat with very big dreams. While other cats napped in sunny windows, Mittens wanted adventure.

One afternoon, she padded toward the old lighthouse. There, in the garden beneath a swaying palm tree, sat something magical — a tiny sphinx made of golden stone, no bigger than a teacup.

"Hello, little cat," the sphinx purred, blinking gemstone eyes.

Mittens' whiskers twitched. "You can talk!"

"I can do many things," said the sphinx. "I can grant one wish to the brave cat who can beat my challenge."

Mittens sat up tall. "I'm brave! What's the challenge?"

The sphinx's eyes flashed like lightning. "You must touch the lightning bolt that strikes the old oak tree tomorrow at noon."

Mittens' heart pounded. Touch lightning? No cat could do that!

But that night, she dreamed of heroes and magical quests. At dawn, she climbed to the highest branch of the palm tree to watch the sky.

At exactly noon, a single lightning bolt cracked the sky. It didn't hit the oak tree. Instead, it arced toward the pond behind it.

"I'm not afraid!" Mittens cried, and something wonderful happened — she started swimming through the air, her paws gliding like she was in water. The air became warm and thick, just like the bathtub she secretly loved.

She swam straight to the lightning, which had turned into a glowing butterfly made of pure light.

"I did it!" she purred, touching its wing.

The sphinx appeared beside her, smiling. "You faced your fears and swam through impossible skies. True bravery isn't about being fearless — it's about trying even when you're scared."

"My wish," Mittens whispered. "I wish every cat could have such an adventure."

The sphinx twinkled. "Granted. Now, whenever cats dream of adventure, their dreams will become real — for one magical night."

And that, they say, is why cats sometimes disappear on moonlit nights, returning at dawn with stories only they can tell.

Mittens curled up in her sunny window, no ordinary cat anymore. She was the cat who had raced lightning, and she knew that courage was the greatest magic of all.
