The Cat Who Played Moonlight Padel
Lily was playing games on her iPhone when she heard a strange thump from the garden. She peeked out the window and gasped. Her fluffy orange cat, Marmalade, was standing on two legs, holding a tiny racket!
"I'm coming," Lily whispered, grabbing her shoes.
She followed Marmalade to the park, where the moonlight painted everything silver. There, by the old tennis court, something impossible was happening. A zombie with patchy green skin and kind eyes stood across the net. But instead of looking scary, he was smiling!
"Your serve, Marmalade!" the zombie called cheerfully.
They were playing padel! Marmalade hit the ball with surprising skill, but the zombie — whose name was Zed — was even better.
"You're getting faster!" Zed encouraged. "Want to try a trick shot?"
Marmalade purred and nodded, then did a little backflip before hitting the ball. It bounced off the wall, past Zed, and landed perfectly in the corner.
"Bravo!" Zed clapped.
Lily couldn't stay hidden any longer. "That's amazing!"
Marmalade's eyes went wide. Zed blinked, then grinned. "A human audience! This is a first."
"You're not scared of zombies?" Lily asked.
"Zed's my best friend!" Marmalade meowed. "We meet every full moon. He teaches me padel, and I teach him how to purr."
Zed nodded. "Being a zombie is lonely. Everyone runs away. But Marmalade saw me playing alone one night and asked to join. True friendship isn't about how someone looks — it's about kindness and fun."
"Can I play too?" Lily asked.
"Always room for a new friend," Zed said, tossing her a racket.
They played until dawn, laughing and hitting trick shots. As the sun began to rise, Zed waved goodbye and faded into the morning mist.
"Same time next month?" Marmalade called.
"Wouldn't miss it!" Zed's voice echoed.
Lily walked home, her heart full of wonder. Her cat was secretly a padel champion, zombies could be kind, and magical friendships were hiding everywhere. She hugged Marmalade, who was now just a regular cat again, but with a tiny racket tucked under her arm.
Some secrets are worth keeping, especially the magical ones that teach you the most important lesson: never judge someone by how they look, because the best friends might be the ones you least expect.
