The Cat Who Pitched Starlight
Lily never liked her wild red hair until the day Barnaby appeared.
Barnaby was no ordinary cat. His fur was the color of a ripe orange, and his green eyes twinkled like captured stars. One summer evening, he trotted into Lily's backyard carrying something magical in his mouth — a baseball made of pure moonlight.
"Play with me," Barnaby seemed to say, dropping the glowing ball at her feet.
But behind the old oak tree lived a grumpy bull named Brutus. Everyone said Brutus was dangerous. Lily's brother claimed Brutus had chased him clear to the creek last week. Lily's heart beat fast just thinking about him.
Barnaby picked up the moonlight baseball and darted toward the tree. Against every instinct, Lily followed.
Brutus was enormous, his massive horns like curved moon crescents. But instead of charging, the bull lowered his head and nudged an old wooden fence post back and forth.
He wasn't sharpening his horns. He was practicing.
Barnaby wound up and pitched the glowing ball. It sailed through the air — and Brutus swung his mighty head!
*CRACK!* The moonlight baseball shot across the meadow like a comet.
Lily gasped. The bull's eyes weren't mean at all. They were lonely.
"Play?" rumbled Brutus in a voice like distant thunder.
For hours, the three of them played under the rising moon. Barnaby pitched, Brutus hit (surprisingly gently for such a giant creature), and Lily ran the bases, her red hair streaming behind her like a banner of flame.
When it was time to leave, Brutus nudged Lily's hand with his velvety nose.
"Tomorrow?" he rumbled hopefully.
Lily hugged Barnaby, who was already curling up for a nap. "Tomorrow."
That night, Lily brushed her wild hair and smiled in the mirror. Some things that seem scary or strange — like bulls behind trees, or hair that won't behave — are just waiting for someone to see the magic inside them.
Barnaby purred from his pillow, already dreaming of their next game under the stars.
