The Cat Who Pitched Magic

Leo loved two things more than anything else: baseball and his cat, Mitten. Every afternoon after school, they'd play catch in the backyard. Leo would throw the ball, and Mitten would chase it with surprising speed, her orange fur blazing like a tiny sun across the grass.

One Tuesday, Leo's friend Sofia came over. She was new to town and had never played baseball before. "I'm not good at sports," she said shyly, hiding behind her backpack.

"That's okay!" Leo said. "Mitten will help!"

They set up in the backyard. Mitten sat calmly on the pitcher's mound, her tail twitching with excitement. Leo showed Sofia how to hold the bat, but her swings kept missing the ball completely.

Then something magical happened. As Mitten wound up to pitch — yes, cats can do magic things in stories — she nudged a bowl of garden spinach toward home plate with her paw. The spinach leaves sparkled with tiny rainbows in the sunlight.

"Eat this," Mitten seemed to say with her big green eyes.

Sofia tried a leaf. "It's... sweet!"

Suddenly, she could see the ball's path before Mitten even threw it. Her next swing connected perfectly — CRACK! The ball sailed over the fence.

"I did it!" Sofia jumped. "The spinach helped!"

They played until sunset, Mitten pitching magical spinach-powered strikes. They learned that trying new things with friends makes everything better, and sometimes the best help comes from unexpected places — even a cat's garden.

That night, Leo tucked Mitten into bed, already wondering what tomorrow's game would bring. Maybe soccer? And what vegetable would help with that?
