The Cat Who Pitched Golden Dreams
Lily had the messiest hair in town—wild brown curls that sprang in every direction like happy springs. Her mom said it had a mind of its own, and secretly, Lily agreed.
One afternoon, while playing catch in her backyard, something magical happened. Lily threw her baseball, but instead of landing in the grass, it glowed golden and rolled behind the old oak tree. When she chased after it, she found a sleek black cat with bright yellow eyes batting at the ball.
"You've got quite an arm," the cat said.
Lily jumped backward. "You can talk!"
"I'm Midnight," the cat purred. "And that's no ordinary baseball you found. It's a Dream Ball—only appears to kids who believe in magic."
Midnight led Lily through a hidden path between two fence posts. Suddenly, they weren't in the neighborhood anymore. They stood in a meadow where fireflies danced even though it was daytime. In the center stood a magnificent creature—a bull with massive golden horns and a coat that shimmered like polished copper.
"That's Ferdinand," Midnight whispered. "Guardian of the Dream Field."
But Ferdinand didn't look fierce. He was busy running in graceful circles around a baseball diamond that appeared in the grass, his hooves tapping out a rhythm like a drum.
"Want to play?" Ferdinand called. "The Dream Game lasts until sunset."
Lily's heart soared. She and Midnight formed a team against Ferdinand. The bull could hit anything, but Lily's pitching was magic. Every time she threw, her curls seemed to spark with tiny rainbows. The baseball left golden trails through the air.
When Ferdinand knocked a ball into the clouds, Lily started running—and discovered she could run faster than the wind itself, her feet barely touching the grass. She leaped and caught the ball, turning a somersault mid-air.
"Incredible!" Ferdinand cheered.
They played until the sky turned purple. As the first star appeared, the field began to fade.
"Come back anytime," Midnight said, touching his nose to her hand. "Dream players are always welcome."
Lily woke up in her backyard, the golden baseball beside her. Her hair was still messy, but now she knew—it wasn't messy at all. It was magic.
From that day on, whenever anyone asked about her wild curls, Lily just smiled. Some secrets are too wonderful to explain.
