The Cat Who Pitched Dreams

Lily's hair was always a wild adventure all its own. Curls bounced like tiny springs, always escaping her ribbons and barrettes. Every morning, her mom tried to tame it, but Lily's hair had a mind of its own.

Mostly, Lily didn't mind. Except on baseball days. Her team, the Sunbeams, was counting on her. But every time she stepped up to bat, her wild curls would bounce into her eyes, and she'd miss the ball.

"You'll never hit anything like that," said Tommy, the worst kind of mean.

Lily ran home, tears streaming down her face. Her cat, Mittens, found her hiding behind the oak tree in the backyard. Mittens was orange with white paws, and somehow always knew when Lily needed comfort.

"Why can't I just be normal?" Lily sobbed, burying her face in Mittens' soft fur.

The cat purred deeply and trotted toward the old pond behind their house. Lily followed, sniffling. Something shimmered beneath the water's surface.

A goldfish with scales like tiny stars swam to the edge. But this was no ordinary goldfish—it was the size of a dinner plate!

"Your hair isn't messy," the goldfish spoke in a voice like silver bells. "It's magical. Those curls catch dreams."

Lily gasped. "You can talk?"

"I'm Neptune, guardian of the Starlight Pond," said the goldfish. "And I've been waiting for someone like you. Someone whose heart is bigger than her worries."

From that day on, Lily and Mittens visited Neptune. The goldfish taught her something wonderful: when she believed in herself, her hair would stop bouncing and start glowing with golden light.

At the championship game, Lily stepped to the plate. Tommy called out, "Here comes Strikeout Queen!"

Lily closed her eyes, remembered Neptune's words, and felt her hair begin to warm. It glowed with soft golden light. She opened her eyes—everything looked clearer. Brighter.

The pitch came. Lily swung with all her heart.

*CRACK!*

The ball sailed over the fence. Her teammates cheered so loudly that the birds in the trees joined in.

That evening, Lily, Mittens, and even the team sat by the pond. Neptune surfaced to hear all about it.

"True friends, like true magic, come in all shapes and sizes," Neptune said. "Even in fishy packages."

Lily hugged Mittens. Her hair curled wildly around her face, and for the first time, she didn't want to change a single curl.
