The Cat Who Painted Stars
Lily was never good at running. At school, she was always the last one to finish the race. Her legs felt heavy, her breath came in gasps, and her cheeks burned hot.
One afternoon, Lily sat under the old palm tree in her backyard, hiding from her friends who were playing tag. I'm just not fast, she thought, tracing patterns in the dirt with her toe.
That's when she heard it—a tiny sneeze.
Lily looked up. Perched on the highest branch of the palm tree sat the most unusual cat she'd ever seen. Its fur shimmered like moonlight, and its eyes held all the colors of a rainbow.
"Bless you," said Lily politely.
"Thank you," said the cat.
Lily gasped. "You can talk!"
"Of course," said the cat, leaping gracefully from the tree. "I'm Starlight, and I've been watching you. You're running away from what scares you."
Lily felt her cheeks get hot. "I'm just not fast like the other kids."
Starlight nudged Lily's hand with her soft head. "Open your palm."
Confused, Lily held out her hand. Starlight pressed her paw against Lily's palm. Suddenly, Lily felt a warm tingle spread through her whole body. When she looked at her palm, she saw tiny glowing lights swirling there—like captured stars.
"These are your wishes," Starlight whispered. "Whenever you're afraid, remember you carry stars in your palm. Now—run with me!"
Starlight darted toward the park, and Lily found herself running too. But something was different. Her body felt light, almost like she was floating. Each step made her palm glow brighter.
They ran past the playground where her friends were playing tag.
"Lily!" called her friend Mei. "Come play!"
Normally Lily would have made an excuse. But with stars tingling in her palm, she called back, "Catch me if you can!"
Lily ran faster than she ever had before. She wasn't running away anymore—she was running toward the fun, toward her friends, toward everything she'd been missing.
Starlight watched from under the palm tree, her rainbow eyes twinkling. Lily didn't need the magic anymore—she had found something even stronger: the courage to try.
That night, Lily fell asleep with a smile. She didn't know if Starlight had been real or just a wonderful dream. But she did know that sometimes the bravest thing you can do is simply keep running toward what scares you—and discover it wasn't so scary after all.
