The Cat Who Loved Lightning
Barnaby was a small orange cat with a very big secret. While other cats chased mice or napped in sunbeams, Barnaby loved lightning.
"Crazy cat!" grumbled Old Bess the cow. "Lightning is scary!"
But Barnaby disagreed. When storms rumbled across the sky, he sat on the farmhouse roof, watching purple bolts dance like golden ribbons. "It's magic," he purred. "Someday I'll catch a lightning bolt in my paws."
One rainy afternoon, Barnaby spotted something strange behind the garden shed. A massive bull lay sobbing into a patch of spinach.
"What's wrong?" Barnaby asked.
The bull sniffled. "I'm Ferdinand. I'm supposed to be fierce, but I only want to eat spinach and dream about being someone's friend. The other bulls make fun of me."
Barnaby's tail twitched. "I know how that feels! Everyone laughs at me for loving lightning. But you know what? Different is special."
Ferdinand nibbled a spinach leaf. "You really think so?"
"I know so!" Barnaby's eyes widened as storm clouds gathered. "This is it – my chance to catch lightning! Want to come?"
Ferdinand trembled. "But what if it's scary?"
"That's what makes it brave," Barnaby said softly.
Together, cat and bull climbed the highest hill. Lightning cracked the sky open. Most animals would have run, but Ferdinand stood firm beside his new friend. Barnaby reached toward the sky as a bolt struck nearby – not to catch it, but to feel its power.
"You're not scared!" Ferdinand marveled.
"Not with a friend by my side," Barnaby purred.
The storm passed, painting the sky rainbow colors. Ferdinand munched another spinach leaf. "Being different isn't so bad when you have someone who understands."
"And that," said Barnaby, "is the real magic."
