The Cat Who Knit Starlight

Lily lived in a house at the edge of the world, where the sky curved down to meet the grass. She was lonely, with no one but her stuffed bear Barnaby and her favorite blue hat with the silver bell. Every night, she wished for a friend.

One evening, something peculiar appeared in her backyard. A orange cat with glowing green eyes sat beside a mysterious black cable that stretched up into the stars like an inky ribbon. The cat purred a melody that made the hairs on Lily's arms dance.

"I'm Marmalade," the cat said, though her mouth didn't move. "And this cable connects your world to the realm of wishes. But it's broken — someone needs to catch the falling wishes before they fade."

Marmalade tossed Lily something unexpected: a baseball made of pure light. "Wishes are like baseballs," she explained. "You have to swing at them, or they'll keep flying past."

Lily adjusted her hat, the bell jingling courageously. With Barnaby tucked under her arm and Marmalade by her side, she learned to catch wishes as they tumbled like stars through the night sky. Each wish she caught burst into butterflies that carried messages to other lonely children.

But the cable was weakening. To save it, Lily had to make the hardest catch of all — a wish so big it burned like a small sun. She jumped, her blue hat streaming behind her like a comet's tail, and caught it in both hands.

The wish transformed Marmalade into a real cat who could stay forever. The cable dissolved into ribbons of light that wrapped around Lily's wrist, connecting her heart to hearts all over the world.

Now, whenever another child feels lonely, Lily sends them a wish through her magical connection. And sometimes, if you look closely at the stars, you can see a blue hat catching wishes, reminding everyone that friendship is the bravest thing we can catch.
