The Cat Who Knew Too Much
Maya pulled her beanie **hat** down lower, practically swallowing her forehead. The worst bad **hair** day in history had struck right before freshman year's biggest party, and she was currently hiding behind a hedge in Mrs. Henderson's front yard.
"You're being ridiculous," she whispered to herself. But her feet wouldn't move.
Inside the house, Jordan—the Jordan who'd barely acknowledged her existence since seventh grade—was laughing at something. That laugh. The one that made Maya's stomach do backflips. She'd told herself she was just passing by, just walking the cat, just coincidentally lingering. But let's be real: she was basically a low-budget **spy** at this point.
Her phone buzzed. Group chat blowing up. Everyone was talking about Jordan's party. The social hierarchy was realigning like some cosmic drama, and Maya was stuck outside the gravitational pull.
Then disaster struck. On her retreat, she tripped over her own **cat**—Luna, who'd decided this was the perfect moment to weave between her ankles. Maya faceplanted into Mrs. Henderson's prized garden, directly into a patch of something green and leafy.
She scrambled up, praying nobody had seen. But Jordan was suddenly there, standing on the porch.
"Maya? You okay?"
Humiliation level: maximum. She had **spinach** in her teeth. In her hair. On her favorite hoodie. This was it. The social death she'd been avoiding since middle school.
But then Jordan laughed. Not mean laughter. The real kind. "Dude, I have baby spinach in my teeth half the time from my mom's health kicks. Come inside, I've got a mirror."
And just like that, the invisible wall between them cracked. Maya's hat came off. The embarrassment was still there, but somehow, it wasn't the end of the world. Sometimes, the most embarrassing moments are just life's weird way of breaking down walls.
Besides, Luna was already making friends with Jordan's dog. Some cats really did know everything.
