The Cat Who Knew Too Much

Midnight was the best time to be a cat, or so Mittens thought. While her family slept, she crept through the garden, her gray fur blending with moon shadows. But Mittens had a secret — she wasn't just wandering. She was a spy.

Every night, she watched the old papaya tree near the river. Something magical happened there, but she'd never seen what. Tonight, she crouched behind a fern, her golden eyes wide.

Splash!

A ripe papaya fell into the water below. But instead of floating away, it glowed like a tiny moon! The river began to sparkle, and fish leaped up, catching papaya slices in their mouths.

Mittens leaned closer, her whiskers twitching. Suddenly, something tapped her shoulder.

"I've been watching you watching," said a tiny voice.

A green tree lizard stood on her shoulder, wearing a leaf like a hat. "I'm Pip. The papaya tree drops magic fruit only for true friends."

"True friends?" Mittens asked.

"Animals who share their secrets," Pip said. "Now we have to run! The magic only lasts until sunrise!"

Mittens hesitated. She'd never had a friend before. But something about Pip's smile made her heart feel warm.

Together, they ran to the riverbank, where glowing fish offered them papaya slices. When Mittens took a bite, she could understand the fish singing songs! She and Pip danced under the stars while the water sparkled like diamonds.

"I'm glad I found you," Mittens purred as dawn approached.

"And I'm glad someone finally noticed the magic," Pip said.

From that night on, Mittens was never alone again. She learned that the best discoveries aren't secrets to keep — they're wonders to share.
