The Cat Who Knew Riddles

Luna was a small gray cat with bright yellow eyes and a very curious tail. It seemed to have a mind of its own, always twitching toward adventure. One warm summer evening, Luna's tail led her through a garden gate she'd never noticed before.

Beyond the gate lay a pool of water that sparkled like liquid stars. Luna had never seen anything so magical. She stepped closer, and suddenly the water began to glow. From its depths rose an enormous creature with the body of a lion and the head of a wise human.

"Welcome, little one," said the sphinx. "I am Rafi, guardian of this magical pool. Many creatures come here seeking answers, but you are the first cat in one hundred years."

Luna's ears perked up. "A hundred years? That's a very long time for a cat!"

Rafi smiled. "Indeed it is. But I see something special in you. You possess the courage of lions and the wisdom of ancients. Would you like to hear a riddle?"

Luna nodded enthusiastically.

"I have cities but no houses, mountains but no trees, and water but no fish. What am I?"

Luna thought very hard. She paced around the pool, her tail twitching. Then she stopped and looked up with wide eyes. "A map!"

"Correct!" Rafi roared with laughter. "You are clever indeed. For solving my riddle, I grant you one wish."

Luna thought carefully. She could wish for endless tuna treats, or a soft bed that never grew cold, or even to be the most beautiful cat in the world. But instead, she said, "I wish that every cat could have a friend like me — someone to share adventures with and who would never feel lonely."

Rafi's eyes shone with approval. "You have chosen wisdom over treasure. Your wish is granted."

He touched his nose to Luna's forehead, and she felt a warm tingling spread through her. When she returned home, she found a small kitten curled up on her porch, all alone and scared. Luna knew exactly what to do. She curled around the kitten and purred, and in that moment, she understood the greatest magic of all — friendship.

From that day on, Luna and her new friend Pip shared many adventures. And whenever they passed the garden gate, they would see the sphinx watching over them, his mysterious smile reminding them that the best wishes are the ones we make for others.
