The Cat Who Knew My Secret

bullspycat

I never thought I'd be the kind of person who went full spy mode on anyone, but here I was, crouched behind the bleachers during third period, watching Skylar talk to THE absolute worst person in our grade—Jordan, whose entire personality was just being a walking bull meme.

My phone buzzed. The group chat was already dissecting every move like it was the Super Bowl. "They're definitely talking about you," Maya had typed. "Jordan looked right at your locker three times today."

Great. So the whole school knew I was obsessed with Skylar, and now Jordan—classic bull in a china shop—was probably ruining whatever tiny chance I had left.

That's when I saw it: a scraggly gray cat, the same one that lived behind the gym, winding through Skylar's legs. Skylar smiled, actually smiled, and petted it like it was the most normal thing in the world.

The cat looked directly at me.

Then it trotted over and sat at my feet like it was waiting for something.

"You're not gonna spy on me too, are you?" I whispered.

The cat blinked slowly, then nudged my hand with its head. And I swear to god, in that moment, I realized something: I'd been so focused on being invisible, on not getting gored by Jordan's bull antics, on staying safe in my little hiding spot—I'd forgotten that sometimes the best things happen when you stop hiding.

I stood up. The cat followed.

Skylar saw me first. Their face lit up, and they waved.

Jordan turned, mouth open to say something awful, but the cat walked right up to them and let out the most unimpressed meow I'd ever heard.

Skylar laughed. "Sorry, Jordan. The cat has spoken."

I walked over, heart pounding, and something shifted. The spy games, the bullcrap social dynamics—they all seemed suddenly small.

"Want to meet my new friend?" Skylar asked, gesturing to the cat.

And yeah, maybe it was just a cat. But it was also the first time all year I didn't feel like I was hiding from everyone.

"Yeah," I said. "Yeah, I really do."
