The Cat Who Knew Everything

Lily was only six when she discovered her cat, Mochi, could talk. It happened on a Tuesday, while Lily was practicing her swimming in the bathtub. Mochi sat on the bath mat, watching with golden eyes.

"You're doing it wrong," Mochi said. "Humans splash too much."

Lily froze. Bubbles covered her nose. "You can talk?"

"I've always been able to talk," Mochi replied, grooming her paw. "I just didn't have anything interesting to say until now. Tonight, we're going on an adventure."

That night, when the moon hung like a silver coin, Mochi led Lily through their backyard fence and into a forest she'd never seen before. The trees glowed softly, and fireflies danced like tiny stars.

"Where are we going?" Lily asked, holding Mochi's paw as they walked.

"To meet my friend," Mochi said mysteriously. "She's very old and very wise."

They came to a clearing where a crystal pool shimmered under the moonlight. Beside it sat a creature Lily had only seen in books—a sphinx! She had the body of a lion and the face of a kind woman, with enormous feathery wings folded at her sides.

"Welcome, young one," the sphinx said. Her voice sounded like wind chimes. "I am Seraphina, guardian of the Pool of Wishes. Mochi told me about you."

"You know Mochi?" Lily gasped.

"We've been friends for many years," Seraphina smiled. "Cats are magical creatures, Lily. They can see things humans cannot. Mochi sees something special in you."

Mochi puffed out her chest. "Lily is brave. She saved a butterfly yesterday. And she shares her snacks."

Seraphina nodded. "Kindness is the greatest magic of all. Tonight, I will grant you one wish. But first, you must swim across my pool."

The water looked deep and mysterious. Lily's heart pounded.

"I... I'm not very good at swimming yet," she whispered.

Mochi rubbed against her leg. "I'll be right here. You don't have to be perfect. You just have to be brave."

Lily took a deep breath and stepped into the water. It was warm and sparkled like diamonds. She began to swim, stroke by stroke. When she reached the middle, she looked down and saw stars swimming beneath her—tiny glowing fish that looked like pieces of the night sky.

When she climbed out on the other side, Seraphina was smiling.

"You did it," the sphinx said. "Now, what is your wish?"

Lily thought carefully. She could wish for anything—treasure, magic powers, a castle. But she looked at Mochi, who was purning loudly, and at Seraphina, who watched with ancient, kind eyes.

"I wish that Mochi could visit her friend whenever she wants," Lily said. "And that I could come too."

Seraphina's eyes shone with tears. "That, my dear, is the wisest wish I've ever heard."

She touched Lily's forehead with her wing, and Lily felt warm all over, like drinking hot cocoa on a snowy day.

"Now you are part of our secret club," Seraphina said. "Whenever you wish to visit, just follow Mochi under the full moon."

Lily hugged Mochi tight. "This is the best adventure ever."

"And it's just the beginning," Mochi purred. "Wait until you meet the dragons."

They walked home as the sun began to rise, a little girl, a magical cat, and a friendship that would last forever. Some secrets, Lily learned, are too wonderful to keep—but the best ones are the ones you share with friends.
