The Cat Who Knew Everything
Lily's cat Whiskers was no ordinary kitty. Every afternoon at exactly three o'clock, Whiskers would trot to the garden fence and meow at the old papaya tree next door. One Tuesday, Lily decided to follow.
Behind the fence lay a magical garden she'd never noticed before. In the center stood a tiny sphinx no bigger than a garden gnome, with butterfly wings and emerald eyes.
"You're finally here!" the sphinx said. "Whiskers has been telling me about you."
Lily gasped. "You can understand my cat?"
"Whiskers is quite extraordinary," the sphinx said. "Right now, he's trying to help our friend."
She pointed to a pale figure shuffling near the papaya trees. It looked like a zombie, with gray skin and stiff movements, but instead of being scary, it was trying to water the plants with an empty watering can.
"That's Zed," the sphinx explained. "He's not really a zombie—he's a garden sprite who's forgotten how to be magical. He's been walking around in a daze for weeks."
"How can we help?" Lily asked.
"The golden papaya!" Whiskers meowed, jumping onto a branch. "The one that glows when the moon rises!"
Lily climbed up and found a single papaya that shimmered like a tiny sun. She plucked it and gave it to Zed.
As he ate, color returned to his cheeks. His eyes sparkled. He stretched his arms and did a joyful cartwheel.
"I remember!" Zed cheered. "I'm the guardian of growing things!" He sprinkled magic dust over the garden, and flowers bloomed instantly.
"Thank you," the sphinx told Lily. "You and Whiskers saved our friend."
That night, Lily learned something wonderful: sometimes the scariest-looking problems just need a little kindness—and maybe a magical fruit—to solve them. And from then on, she always followed Whiskers on adventures.
