The Cat Who Knew Everything
Maya scrolled through her iPhone at 2 AM, feeling like a zombie from another week of all-nighters. Her thumb moved automatically, brain barely processing the endless stream of TikToks and Instagram stories. Just another night of being undead while technically alive.
Then something crashed outside her window.
A cat—a scrawny, one-eared tabby with eyes like polished emeralds—sat on her fire escape, staring at her like she owed it money. Maya cracked the window open, and the cat slipped inside with an attitude that suggested she lived here now.
"You're bold," Maya whispered.
The cat responded by knocking a book off her shelf. The Ancient History textbook from Mr. Harrison's class fell open to a page about the Great Sphinx of Giza. Maya had been avoiding that assignment all week.
The cat plopped onto the book, tail twitching, and stared at Maya with those ancient eyes. Something shifted in Maya's chest—like she was finally waking up from a semester-long sleepwalk.
"Okay, Sphinx," she said, smiling. "What's your riddle?"
The cat butted her head against Maya's hand, and for the first time in months, Maya felt something real. Not filtered, not performed, not doomscrolled into oblivion. Just genuine.
She grabbed her phone, opened her notes app, and started writing. Not a post, not a story. Actual words. About a girl who'd been walking through life half-asleep until a cat reminded her how to feel again.
The Sphinx cat purred like a tiny motor, and Maya realized she wasn't a zombie anymore. She was just a girl who'd forgotten how to be present in her own life.
"Thanks," she whispered, scratching behind the cat's ears. "I needed that."
