The Cat Who Knew Everything

Maya's life had become a carefully curated pyramid of expectations. AP classes at the base, varsity soccer somewhere in the middle, and social media perfection at the top—where she currently sat, exhausted and scrolling through her own fake happiness.

"Have you taken your vitamin D?" Her mom's voice cut through her room like it always did at 7:03 AM. "It's literally February, Maya. Seasonal depression is real."

"Got it, Mom," Maya lied, shoving the orange bottle into her backpack. She'd been faking taking them for months. What did her mom know about navigating sophomore year anyway?

The first time she saw the cat behind the school's dumpster, she was hiding from Tyler after their disastrous cafeteria encounter. You know the type—the kind where you accidentally say "thanks, love you" instead of "thanks, bye" and then trip over your own feet trying to escape. She'd needed to disappear immediately.

The cat, a scrappy orange tabby with one ear that refused to stand up, had stared at her with zero judgment.

"You too, huh?" Maya had whispered, sitting on the cold concrete. "Everyone's got their pyramid scheme. Mine's just called high school."

Now the cat—she called him Vitamin, because he was basically the only thing keeping her from losing it—waited for her every Tuesday and Thursday behind the gym. She'd started bringing actual tuna sandwiches instead of the cafeteria's mystery meat.

"You're never gonna believe this," Maya said, dropping to the ground beside him two weeks later. "I got a C on my history project. About actual pyramids. The irony is not lost on me."

Vitamin head-butted her hand like the emotional support animal he hadn't signed up to be.

"My parents are gonna freak," she continued. "They think I'm gonna fail at everything if I'm not perfect at everything. But honestly? I'd rather just sit here with you than climb that stupid social pyramid anymore."

The moment the words left her mouth, she realized how much she meant them. The fake smiles, the curated posts, the exhausting race to nowhere—she was done.

Vitamin purred, loud and unapologetic, like he'd been waiting for her to figure it out.

That night, Maya took her vitamin D for real. Then she posted a photo of Vitamin with the caption: "This cat has more emotional intelligence than everyone in my grade combined. No filter."

Twenty minutes later, Jenna from her bio class commented: "OMW he's so cute WHERE"

And just like that, the pyramid didn't matter anymore.
