The Cat Who Knew Everything

Lily loved her grandma's old house. It smelled like cinnamon and secrets. But her favorite thing was Barnaby, the fat orange cat who slept in sunbeams.

One rainy afternoon, Lily was playing on her iphone when Barnaby jumped onto the windowsill. He meowed loudly, his yellow eyes glowing strangely.

"Follow me," Barnaby seemed to say. Lily had never seen a cat look so determined.

She followed him up the creaky attic stairs, where she found something magical—a dusty book that opened to a page about the Great Sphinx of Egypt. Suddenly, golden light swirled around her!

When the light faded, Lily stood in a desert. Before her towered a magnificent sphinx with the body of a lion and the head of a wise woman.

"Young traveler," the Sphinx rumbled, "you may pass only if you answer my riddle: What has a screen but cannot see, connects people but cannot speak, and holds memories but cannot remember?"

Lily thought hard. She knew this! She reached into her pocket and pulled out her iphone. "This! It shows me pictures but doesn't see them itself. It lets me call my friends but doesn't have its own voice. And it saves photos but doesn't remember the moments like I do."

The Sphinx smiled. "Correct. But you must learn—technology connects us, but true friendship needs more than screens."

She waved her paw, and a gentle bull appeared from behind a dune. His coat was like polished copper.

"This is Ferdinand," the Sphinx said. "He was once a farmer's bull who dreamed of adventure. Now he guides lost children home."

Lily realized something important. She had been so busy with her phone that she hadn't noticed Barnaby wanted to play, or that her grandma wanted to teach her to bake cookies.

"I understand," Lily whispered. "Real magic is right in front of me."

Back in the attic, Barnaby purred loudly. Lily put away her iphone and scratched his ears. Grandma called from downstairs, "Lily, want to make cinnamon rolls?"

"Yes!" Lily grinned. She had learned something wonderful—the best adventures are the ones we share with those we love, right here in the real world.
