The Cat Who Knew Everything

Leo loved baseball more than anything. Every afternoon after school, he'd grab his glove and run to the park, tossing the ball high into the sunny sky. "One day I'll be a famous player," he'd whisper, catching the ball with a satisfying *thwack*.

But Leo had a secret. His fluffy orange cat, Mitten, always followed him to the park, hiding behind trees and watching every game. Leo pretended not to notice. He called Mitten his little *spy*, because the cat seemed to know everything about everyone in the neighborhood.

One hot afternoon, Leo struck out three times in a row. Tears filled his eyes as he sat alone on the bench. "I'm never going to be good at anything," he sobbed.

Suddenly, Mitten jumped onto the bench beside him. But this time, something was different. The cat's fur began to shimmer like golden sunlight, and she grew larger and larger until a magnificent creature stood before Leo—a lion with the head of a wise eagle, like the *sphinx* from his storybook!

"I have been watching you, young Leo," the sphinx spoke in a voice like wind through chimes. "Not as a spy, but as a guardian. You have a brave heart."

Leo gasped. "Mitten? You're a... a sphinx?"

"Indeed," she said, her golden *hair* flowing like a river of light. "And I have something to show you."

The sphinx touched Leo's forehead with her paw. Suddenly, he saw himself through her eyes—not as a boy who failed, but as someone who never gave up, who practiced every day, who helped younger kids learn to catch, who shared his equipment with friends who had none.

"True greatness isn't about perfect hits," the sphinx told him. "It's about kindness, courage, and never stopping when things get hard. You, Leo, are already extraordinary."

Leo wiped his tears and hugged his magical friend. "Will you still be my cat?"

The sphinx purred, turning back into fluffy Mitten. "Always. Now let's go home. I believe there's ice cream, and *cat*s love extra sprinkles."

From that day on, Leo still loved baseball, but he loved helping others even more. And sometimes, when no one was looking, he could have sworn he saw golden sparkles dancing in Mitten's fur.
