The Cat Who Knew Everything
Lily was supposed to be sleeping, but her eyes kept peeking open. Every night at midnight, something strange happened in her room. Her orange tabby cat, Marmalade, would hop onto the windowsill and stare at the moon as if having a secret conversation.
Tonight, Lily's iPhone buzzed with a message from an unknown number: THE GOLDEN SPHINX NEEDS YOU. BRING THE GOLDFISH.
Lily sat up, heart pounding. She scooped up her fishbowl where Bubbles, her goldfish, swam in endless circles. "Come on, Marmalade," she whispered.
The cat led her through a shimmering portal that appeared on her bedroom wall. Suddenly, they weren't in Lily's house anymore. They stood before a magnificent pyramid made of crystal that glowed with inner light. At its entrance sat a sphinx — but not like in books. This sphinx had fur like Marmalade's and wise, knowing eyes.
"You came," the sphinx purred. "The pyramid's magic is fading because children stopped believing in wonder. Only someone with a pure heart can restore it."
Lily's hands trembled, clutching the fishbowl. "What must I do?"
"Place Bubbles at the pyramid's peak," said the sphinx. "A goldfish who has lived in a child's room holds the magic of imagination. And you, Lily, must believe with all your heart."
Marmalade rubbed against Lily's legs, purring loudly. She realized her cat had been guarding the portal all along, protecting the magic until someone worthy came along.
Lily climbed the crystal steps. At the top, she closed her eyes and whispered, "I believe in magic. I believe in wonder. I believe in dreams." She placed the fishbowl gently on the peak.
Bubbles swam faster and faster, creating tiny golden ripples. Those ripples spread outward, turning into sparkles that cascaded down the pyramid's sides. The crystal structure blazed with renewed light, shooting stars into the night sky.
"Thank you," the sphinx called. "Remember, Lily — magic lives wherever you find it."
Back in her room, Lily tucked Marmalade into bed beside her. Her iPhone showed one last message: SEE YOU NEXT TIME YOU BELIEVE.
Lily smiled, hugging her cat. Some secrets were worth keeping, especially the magical ones.
