He nudged her toward the sphinx. Just then, a splash came from the garden pond. A tiny goldfish leaped from the water and transformed mid-air into a shimmering golden fairy with wings like spun sunlight.

'Welcome, Lily!' the goldfish-fairy chimed. 'We've been waiting so long for someone with an imagination as big as yours.'

The sphinx's stone face warmed and softened until it became a wise old guardian. 'Every child needs magic,' it spoke in a rumble like distant thunder. 'But only those who believe can see it.'

Lily's heart swelled with wonder. 'I believe now,' she whispered.
